Tether less Small Cell Base Stations Using Drone Platforms

With the increasing growth in mobile data and the scarcity of licensed frequency spectrum, telecommunication operators are looking at every tool at hand for solutions to increase the efficiency of their networks. Deploying more small cells and achieving a higher spectrum reuse could increase network capacity – this solution proposes a novel method of using unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) as mobile Base Stations to cover interested areas because of their flexibility, easy deployment, low cost and they can be used for compensating cell outage, improving public safety communications and cell overload situation. Drones can also be used for providing coverage for ground users in the emergency or disaster situation. Another useful opportunity for employing drones is the dynamically hot spot scenario, such as a large sporting or cultural event.

The judges were impressed with this solution – it combines a number of know ideas into a new solution – its simplicity gives it great scope. There additional areas of innovation and improvements in efficiencies and combining additional technologies such as solar panels and hybrid designs. The potential client base is large and global.

illuminate – Intelligent Underground Photogrammetry for Mining

Winner – IT Technical Innovation category

This innovation looks to automate the process used to decide on the direction of mining based on ore layout. The current process is done manually and is typically achieved by a photo being taken underground and then analysed by a geologist in the lab.

This system can automate the photo capture by the use of drones and can return results in less time that the manual lab analysis – this can result in the saving of days. This also had an added benefit in terms of reducing visits to the mining face / underground and with it a corresponding safety benefit.

The current algorithm is returning results with accuracies between 70 and 80%, and this compares well to results returned by geologist (75%). Refinement of the algorithm and greater standardisation of image capture can look to improve the accuracies still.

The judges were impressed with this submission, it is well thought out and presented. Also, having a mature trial in existence made it easy to realise the real world potential of this innovation. The submission also highlighted the fact that even though mining makes up 50% of exports that we are still seeing on a fraction of the start-ups in this area.

Academy is an interesting and much needed application for the student community.

Students are constrained to utilise multiple applications – for their academic (Blackboard for example), semester dates and schedules (various calendar applications), personal emails (Google or other email apps) and their social life (Facebook and other social media applications).

Academy comes across as an easy and elegant solution to bring all these together in one system.

Maximillian deserves recommendation not just for identifying an interesting niche but also for a quality video as a Sales pitch. The judges think this would have serious interest within the student community. However with the usual financial constraints most students work under there isn’t clarify on the revenue models.

Efficient use of kinetic energy harvesting for self-powered wearables

Advances in energy harvesting hardware have created an opportunity for realizing self-powered wearables for continuous and pervasive human context recognition.

This innovation was a thorough analysis of the need and solution’s of energy requirements of wearable technologies. There was clear applicability to industry which demonstrated  the true value of the technology.

As “big data” becomes ever increasing component of business we seeing that analysis is now requiring data warehouse sizes where the volume of data exceeds the virtual and physical capacity or cost limitations.

This solution has developed a new compression method for large graphs and it is applicable to different types including social, computer and road networks.

The compressed graph requires less storage space (Volume in Big Data), and it is possible to work on the compressed graph, it speeds up the graph algorithms (Velocity in Big Data).

An example in a routing application for smartphones, we may not be able to store the whole map on the smartphone because of storage and processing limitations. The map can be represented as a graph and routing algorithms are the shortest path algorithms in graph theory. By using this approach, we can have a compressed map on the smartphone and routing algorithms continue to function on the compressed data, providing an improvement in speed and storage.

The judges were impressed with this submission, utilising a pure math solution to find a better way to store data and enhance the use of that data.

Cooperative Indoor Localisation

The proposed innovation was highly academic in nature. Whilst it was interesting to navigate the technical assessment of different PDR systems, it was unclear as to the practical application of the findings. The value of innovations is in the execution and in this case, application of the innovation with industry is key.

Traditional Cultural Craft Interactive Customizing Platform

This business innovation provides a platform for collaborative cultural innovation supporting collaboration between Australia and China by utilising advanced interactive technology to boost the cultural exchange between the two countries.  This provides a novel approach in providing access to a customised traditional cultural craft producing system.  The platform allows for the personalisation of traditional cultural crafts through the use of three key features being digitalizing, socializing and personalised interactive experience.

The judges were impressed with this innovation and saw it being used as a cultural bridge between China and Australia and the new and old worlds.  Whilst it is still in its early stage the judges were able to see the market for such an innovation particularly in the philanthropic space.

Social change or empowerment of SMEs through Cloud based solution

Small the medium enterprises make up 90% of businesses in India and are seen as the backbone of the economy however the uptake of cloud services is incredibly slow.  If Indian small the medium enterprises were to adopt the latest technology and tools they could boost revenue by $56 billion and create 1.1 million new jobs (Boston Consulting Group report).

This IT enabled business innovation focuses on social change and empowerment of the small to medium enterprise sector through the use of cloud based, open source solutions initially targeted at the Indian companies.  This innovation will educate and empower small the medium enterprises by providing access to cloud based open source software, platforms and infrastructure to help companies to innovate and compete globally as well as in local market.

There is a strong potential for commercializing this application and in doing so drive social and economic change.  The judges were impressed with the research around the economic impact this innovation could result in however they did identified limitations around the current IT infrastructure in India particularly the internet which could impact service delivery and uptake.

Finalist – IT-enabled Business Innovation category

The team at Go Digi deserves a commendation for their enthusiasm, passion, research & their ability to find a small possible niche in the area of business to consumer apps.

It addresses a possible market for easy storage and retrieval of bills focused on the taxation returns. Once the app establishes real time processing with ATO, there could be benefits for both the Taxation office and for the individual user to manage the presently cumbersome billing & invoicing process. There are obvious added benefits of the user data which can be leveraged by the retailers for targeting marketing campaigns as an example

It is commendable that the team has managed to build the app on a bootstrapped budget and the young entrepreneurs are very passionate about their ability to service this possible niche. However, the team needs to do further research on other available products (Invoice2Go & Rewardle are just 2 examples), drive further thought leadership into their value proposition and consider more innovative business models (for example data management and analytics as a key revenue driver as opposed to revenue from user usage).

Online Medical Image Communication & Analytics

Shen Lu is developing a cloud based online platform which aims to improve the medical image examination process and quality of health care. The system aims to provide an integrated environment to medical practitioners from different departments or institutions to (I) communicate multi-modality medical images (ii) apply state-of-the-art machine learning based medical image analytics methods on desktop, tablet and mobile devices. The innovation of the solution derives from: architecture, competitive features, platform API’s.

The judges believed that the concept was clearly presented, showing the value add of the offering, the path to market, a potential business model, a potential implementation path and some competitive analysis. Shen is clearly very passionate about the project which came through to the judges in what was a good presentation which was a pleasure to listen to.

Wi-Fi-ID Human Identification using WiFi signal

Jin Zhang

Finalist – IT Technical Innovation category

Jin Zhang showed how WiFi signals can be used to uniquely identify people by their gait. WiFi-ID analyses the channel state information to extract unique features that are representative of the walking style of an individual which lead to the unique identification of an individual.

WiFi-ID can be implemented on commercial off-the-shelf devices. The system was shown to be able to uniquely identify people with an average accuracy of 93% to 77% from a group of 2 to 6 people, respectively.

The judges believed that the concept was presented in a very clear and focused manner and demonstrated the value add of the offering with solid empirical evidence. Jin identified a path to market, an indication of a potential business model, and offered suggestions for a potential implementation path.  Jim’s passion for his project really came through to the judges in what was a very enjoyable presentation.

Secure and efficient management architecture for the Internet of Things (IoT)

Internet of Things holds promise for a diverse set of industries. It encompasses a wide range of devices enabling interconnection of physical world with digital world. Health monitoring systems (wearables), automates homes and enterprise, smart cities are few examples of applications of IoT. Security is one of the major concerns for IoT and is far reaching. There is a need of energy wise, light weight and secure management framework for IoT.

Judges were impressed to see the detailed research and analysis done to prepare the framework. As there would be billions of devices connected using IoT, The potential impact of this framework is very high.

Reliable and Energy-Efficient Architecture for Cloud Computing

Cloud will undoubtedly have a major impact on service economy. The market analysis data for growth of Cloud computing clearly indicates that the adoption of cloud based services will exponentially grow in coming years. Energy consumption to run the cloud computing data centres is also set grow exponentially. The reliability of cloud services and energy consumption are the two main focus areas of the research project. The project presents a comprehensive view of cloud architecture and recommends methods, tools and policies that could be used to improve the reliability and save energy.

Judges appreciated the depth and comprehensiveness of the research project. The research project is a major focus for large players in cloud computing business and it complements the initiatives by multiple organisations related to this domain.
